Intelligent Class-D Control

In electronic systems, switched-mode circuits are used to deliver power to a load with high power efficiency. This project aims to explore how the strengths of digital control can be used to optimize efficiency and electromagnetic compatibility. Increasing efficiency is especially beneficial for systems that are power dissipated limited and means reduced heat sinks size, smaller systems, greater form factor design freedom and new application.

Traditionally, control loops for switched-mode systems are analog, and digitization is not trivial because of the high frequencies of switching harmonics and transients. By using a low latency  Σ∆-ADC, full digital feedback of the signal path becomes feasible, allowing for high order loop gain to reduce distortion. We think this distortion advantage can then be used to allow for efficiency improvement by optimizing the output filter for efficiency and through soft switching techniques that use an adaptive switching frequency and adaptive dead time. In a next step, these techniques could be applied in multi-level and multi-phase topologies, because the digital control allows for the complex algorithms that will be needed to manage charge- or current balancing Finally, the plan is to extend the digitization to the MOSFET driver, such that the driving signals can be optimized for switching conditions
